Starting on Friday, February 25, Ba gallery will host a collection of paintings and volumes by Banafsheh Ahmadzadeh. The exhibition, titled “Contrast,” will be open to the public until February 9. Banafsheh Ahmadzadeh, an illustrator, painter, sculptor, and art curator, has participated in several group exhibitions and won several awards in the field of illustration. Ahmadzadeh is a full member of the Illustrators Association. In her article for the exhibition, Banafsheh Ahmadzadeh stated: “Two decades of illustration have taught me that contrast has been my starting point in producing images. The first stains on paper and canvas, the dominance of dots and lines over the whiteness of the paper, formed the contrast, but the creation of the image in the service of the story, made the efforts to organize the dots and lines less important. In the search for a narrative, the audience would lose the pleasure of understanding the principles of the image. In a conscious choice, I distanced myself from the story in order to organize the contrast in the image, independent of the story. Geometry was a safe place for my explorations. A geometry that I found in my early drawings to be a simple image with a heavy decorative load. Architecture, and especially Iranian architecture, is a rich reference of geometric forms serving technical function. The works presented in this exhibition are a chosen path for organizing contrast in the visual arts. The works ahead are a design-oriented search for geometric forms.”

Statement

Two decades of illustration have taught me that contrast has always been my starting point in creating images. The first stains on paper and canvas, the dominance of points and lines over the whiteness of the surface, shaped the contrast. However, when creating images in service of a narrative, the efforts to organize points and lines became less significant. The audience, in search of the story, would lose the joy of understanding the principles of imagery.

In a conscious decision, I distanced myself from storytelling to organize contrast within the image, independent of a narrative. Geometry became a safe haven for my explorations—a geometry that, in its initial sketches, revealed an incomplete image laden with excessive ornamentation. Architecture, particularly Iranian architecture, served as a rich reference of geometric forms designed for functional purposes.

The works presented in this exhibition represent a chosen path for organizing contrast within visual arts. These pieces are a designerly exploration of geometric forms.
